Acciaroli, a seaside village, has always welcomed travellers and sailors. The writer Hernest Hemingway visited the village in the Second World War because he was in the United States Fifth Army in 1943 during the Operation Avalanche in the Gulf of Salerno. He was fascinated by the beauty of the village so he decided to come back in 1950 and he stayed until1953. In this period he wrote his masterpiece "The old man and the sea" ispired by his friendship with a local fisherman known as "the old one". In the 60s Ancel Keys moved to Pioppi. He was a biologist and a physiologist. He carefully studied, for more than 40 years, the nutrition of the local people. He came to the conclusion that local people food habits were beneficial for the health. Today the Mediterranean diet is intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
